If you’ve got a property in the Northern Rivers hinterland – whether you’re out past Uki, up toward Kyogle, or somewhere in the folds between Lismore and Nimbin – you know the land can be challenging. Steep slopes, heavy clay soils, unpredictable wet seasons, and dense vegetation mean that earthmoving projects require more planning than on a flat coastal block. The right equipment is essential.
Here’s what operators and property owners in our region need to consider before starting any earthworks on steep hinterland terrain.
The Northern Rivers hinterland is not flat: choose the right equipment.
This sounds obvious, but it’s where many first-time hirers get stuck. A standard excavator that performs perfectly on a flat construction site in Ballina can become genuinely dangerous on a 20-degree slope in the hills behind Mullumbimby. Machines have tipping limits. Tracks behave differently on wet clay than on compacted gravel. And the hinterland has a way of presenting you with both in the same afternoon.
Before you hire any earthmoving equipment for a sloped site, ask yourself or your hire company these questions:
- What is the maximum safe operating angle for this machine?
- Are the tracks rubber or steel? Steel tracks grip clay better on steep terrain.
- What’s the machine’s counterweight setup? A longer arm excavator has a higher centre of gravity and tips more easily.
- Is there a safe flat area to park and operate from? Sometimes the answer is to bench-cut a platform first before doing anything else.
Clay soil changes everything.
The hinterland’s rich, dark soils are great for growing things. They are not great for earthmoving after rain. Northern Rivers clay, particularly the black clay common in the Kyogle and Casino areas, and the red volcanic clay around the Lismore hinterland, becomes extraordinarily slippery when wet and rock-hard when dry.
This affects:
- Traction – Machines can slide sideways on wet clay slopes, even on mild gradients.
- Digging – Dry clay in summer can be almost concrete-like and requires more machine power than you’d expect.
Timing your earthworks matters here. Late dry season (September to November) is generally the sweet spot in the Northern Rivers. The ground has dried out enough to be workable, but you’re not yet into the heat of summer or the uncertainty of the wet season.
Wet season work is possible with the right approach.
Sometimes you can’t wait. Flood recovery, urgency, project timelines – there are plenty of reasons people need earthworks done in the wetter months. If you’re working in the hinterland between December and April, you will need to consider the following.
Ground conditions can change within hours. A dry morning can become a slippery, bogged-out mess by afternoon after a storm cell. Always have a recovery plan. Drainage must be actively managed. Disturbed soil on a slope in heavy rain is a sediment runoff problem waiting to happen. This can impact your project, your downstream neighbours, and waterways. Machine selection is critical in the wet season. Smaller, lighter machines often outperform larger ones on wet slopes. They’re easier to recover if they get into trouble, and they do less damage to the site.
Budget extra time. Wet-season earthmoving in the hinterland almost always takes longer than the same job would in dry conditions.
Talk to someone who knows the region.
This is genuinely important. Hinterland earthmoving is not the same as coastal or inland work, and the differences aren’t always obvious from a spec sheet.
