Clear away the winter debris
Over winter, dead grass, moss, and organic debris build up at the base of your lawn, forming a layer of “thatch” that stops water, air, and nutrients from reaching the soil. If you skip this step, everything you do afterwards works against a blocked-up lawn instead of a healthy one.
The tool for the job: a dethatcher. It rakes through the grass and pulls up the dead material sitting at soil level, instantly opening your lawn to breathe again.
Give the roots room to breathe
Compacted soil is one of the most common (and least visible) reasons lawns struggle in spring. When soil is packed tight, roots can’t spread, water pools instead of soaking in, and grass ends up shallow-rooted and patchy.
The tool for the job: an aerator. It punches small holes through the soil, relieving compaction and giving roots the space and oxygen they need to grow deep and strong.
Prepare the soil properly
If you’re overseeding bare patches, laying new turf, or reworking a garden bed, you need to break up the soil first. Hard, compacted, or uneven ground makes it difficult for new grass or plants to establish.
The tool for the job: a rotary hoe. It works through tough or compacted ground far faster than manual digging, leaving you with a loose, even bed ready for seed, turf, or planting.
Feed your lawn evenly
Fertiliser, lime, or top dressing only works if you apply it evenly. Do it by hand, and you’ll almost always end up with stripes, including patches of lush, overfed grass next to areas that missed out.
The tool for the job: a walk-behind spreader. It distributes product at a consistent rate across your whole lawn, so every square metre gets the same treatment.
